      Dear Editor,

As a Rancho Santa Fe resident, I am writing to voice my opposition to the proposed Silvergate retirement community. While senior housing is an important need, this project raises serious public safety concerns that cannot be overlooked.

Rancho Santa Fe is a designated high fire-risk zone with limited evacuation routes. Adding 162 residential units would place hundreds of additional lives at risk in the event of an emergency. Many of the anticipated residents will be elderly and may require mobility assistance, creating unacceptable delays during mandatory evacuations and endangering the broader community.

Equally troubling is the lack of clarity about how our fire department will manage the increased burden. Without additional resources—such as new stations, staffing, or equipment—our current emergency infrastructure is insufficient. Approving this development without proportional enhancements is a foreseeable mistake, as disasters like the Pacific Palisades fire have tragically shown.

The Association has a fiduciary and moral responsibility to ensure any growth in our community is safe and sustainable. At this time, there is no evidence that our infrastructure is prepared for this level of expansion. Moving forward with the project in its current form would expose Rancho Santa Fe to unnecessary liability and risk.

For these reasons, I strongly urge decision-makers to reject the Silvergate proposal until these fundamental safety issues are addressed.

      Sincerely,

      Jennifer Williams
