Several offices in Rancho Santa Fe are up for election on November 8 including the Santa Fe Irrigation District, RSF School District Board, Fire Protection District, and Community Services District. The filing deadline for these local offices is August 12, no later than 5pm.
Three members of the Rancho Santa Fe School District Board will be up for re-election. RSF School Board members are volunteers who serve four-year terms. Incumbents up for re-election are Board President Tyler Seltzer, Board member Todd Buchner, and Board member Scott Kahn. Kahn filled previous Board Member, Richard Burdge’s seat after his resignation in May 2016.
Santa Fe Irrigation District Division 1 and 2 are up for election. SFID Board members represent each of SFID’s five divisions and serve four-year terms. This year, Division 1 Board Director, Greg Grudzdowich, will not be running for re-election. Incumbent Alan Smerica, Division 2 Board Director is up for re-election. In order to run for the SFID Board, you must live within the boundary of the division, generally western portion of Rancho Santa Fe and Sun Valley for Division 1 and near Interstate Rancho 5 for Division 2.

The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District has three incumbent positions up for election. Board of Directors President James Ashcraft, Board member Nancy Hillgren, and Board member Randall Malin are up for re-election. RSF Fire Protection District Directors serve four-year terms. To run for this office, you must live within the RSF Fire District boundaries.
The Rancho Santa Fe Community Services District has two positions up for election: incumbent Directors Doug Moul’s and Deborah Plummer’s seats. Those wishing to run for the RSF Community Services office must live within the Rancho Santa Fe area.
Candidates seeking to run for any of the positions above must file nomination papers by August 12. Also, August 12 is the last day to submit resolutions from local jurisdictions such as school districts, special districts, cities and counties for ballot qualification.

On August 18, there will be a random drawing of the alphabet to determine the order in which candidates’ names will appear on the ballot. Write-in candidates will be accepted starting on September 12, 57 days before the election. October 25 is the last day for write-in candidates to be accepted.
The San Diego County Registrar of Voters will begin to mail out sample ballots and voter information pamphlets with specific polling places between September 28 and October 28. From October 10 through November 1, the Registrar’s office will process written applications for vote by mail. Between November 2-8, vote by mail ballots will be available at the Registrar of Voters office, located at 5600 Overland Ave, San Diego, CA 92123, in case you cannot make it to the polls on Election Day.
October 24 is the last day to register to vote in the November 8 General Election. Check your registration status here. Polls will be open from 7am to 8pm. Those elected to public office will start their terms on November 25, 2016.
